Hedgehog Masquerade Mask

Description

The tiny Hedgehog mask is very cute but can defend itself. I've adorned it with real porcupine quills and suffered a few accidents (like getting the mask resolutely stuck to my hand; had to take out the tweezers). After trimming the tips and spraying the protective coating, it is still a bit pokey but the hooks are gone. I may make another version with toothpicks instead ;)

My husband and I have been making masks for a couple of years now. We've developed a collection of miniature masquerade masks; we had wondered what tiny creatures like frogs, mice and birds (or fairies perhaps) would wear if they held costume parties and carnivals.

We are offering them on our Etsy store ([link]) and are in the process of turning them into brooches and possibly pendants paired with beautiful lampwork beads I fell in love with. We just showcased them at Ottawa's Maker Faire and the suggestion of making them into jewellery came up several times... Lots of work to do (on top of drawing, whew)!

They start with a polymer clay base shape, acrylic paint, glass beads, embroidery floss trim and feathers if the design calls for it.

Those quills look amazing - even if working with them sounds rather painful! :XD:
